The Export Promotion Program
West Virginia boasts a diverse portfolio of materials used in unique applications throughout the world. Thread manufactured in West Virginia decorates the lapels of the Queen’s Guard in Great Britain. Fine china made in the northern panhandle graces the tables of homes, restaurants and hotels around the world. Travelers in Dubai’s airport terminal are sheltered by stretched steel formed and rolled by mountaineers. Commercial and private planes come to our state from around the country for precision maintenance. Hundreds of millions of car parts contain polymers developed and manufactured in West Virginia.
These successfully exported products are due in large part to the Export Promotion Program, which helps companies navigate the global marketplace, providing support, counseling and connections.
The services offered through the Export Promotion Program provide the strong framework needed for companies to grow and expand internationally.
West Virginia continues to demonstrate a strong and growing export market, reflecting the state’s economic resilience and diverse manufacturing base. In 2023, West Virginia’s exports reached a value of $5.7 billion. This increase was driven by robust performance in various sectors, with coal remaining the most significant export. Other key export products included plastics, machinery and automotive products, wood, chemicals, metals and aerospace. The state’s export strength is strengthened by its ability to deliver high-quality goods to over 140 countries, including major markets like Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, China, Mexico and Brazil. This success can be largely attributed to initiatives like the Export Promotion Program, which provides West Virginia companies with essential support, counseling, and connections to navigate the global marketplace. The program’s services are crucial for helping businesses expand internationally, ensuring that West Virginia’s products continue to have a global impact.
